The Black Phone

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Located in the late 70s in Denver, several disappearances has left the children on edge. Yet the old telephone in the room keeps ringing, with spooky callers giving advice, as the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. This Dramatic Portrait

In the conflict between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in this director's delightfully tacky film adaptation about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye set about profiting from the nation's religious faith. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, yet Jessica Chastain succeeds to depict Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, late night, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

The current week's another release from the filmmaker delivers a spy mystery as tight like the turtlenecks worn by Michael Fassbender's UK spy.
